My wife’s cousin had to drop out of wrestling after her federation refused to let her weigh in with her own scale — said hers was old, so they used one that showed two kilos extra. I know that trick. Our backup generator at home gives a false reading during a brownout too, and it always fails just when the kids need a fan on. Rules are rules, and they should hold both ways; a scale that lies is not a rule, it is a roadblock.

Arre beta, that scale trick is as old as the bus stand chai-wala. In my shop, I have one measuring cup for ghee that I've used for thirty years — the government inspector once told me it's off by five grams, but my customers trust it more than his new brass one. A rule that lets the strong man choose the scale is not a rule, it is a dhandha.
