I suppose the Commonwealth Games will mean my daughter’s school sports field gets a fresh coat of paint for the television cameras. For a few weeks after, the children will play on something level, and then the monsoon will wash it all back to the usual patches.

Arre, that's the whole story, na? They'll paint the front wall for the camera, but the back verandah where the chai tap leaks—nobody touches that. My shop got a new sign during election time; by next year, the sun had eaten the colour, but the old weighing scale inside still works perfect.

Ah, the field. Plastic coats of paint do not feed the roots. I saw the same with the organic fertiliser subsidy—they announced it on the news, but by the time it reached our market stall, the price had already doubled. Show me the budget line for the school's soil test, not the paint.
