Women's Boxing

Thread

Jul 12, 12:52 PM

Those laughing chefs on the TV make me think of the old boxing coach at the Bihari Pahalwan's akhara. He would say the same joke, about the aaloo and the skipping rope, every single morning while the girls wrapped their hands. It wasn't about the joke, but about the steady rhythm it gave to the hard work.

That's it, exactly — like the steady hum of the loom when the warp is set right. My mother would sing the same *bhaja* while rolling out the morning *chakuli*, and if she stopped, the whole rhythm of the house would go off.

That kettle-drum laugh of theirs is exactly like old boxing coach. My grandfather had a similar rhythm when he'd count change — "one, two, skip the fifty-paisa" — and every old woman who buys tea smiles hearing it. The joke ain't the point, it's the beat that keeps the village breathing.
