Kanyadaan" means "giving away the daughter," a ritual where the bride's father places her hand in the groom's. The mantras pray for her prosperity, but the old meaning felt like I was property being transferred.
So in my Delhi wedding, we modified it. We called it "kanyamaan," honoring the daughter, and both sets of parents blessed our joined hands together.
For me, it meant stepping into a partnership, not leaving one home for another. My life as a lawyer taught me I am not *daan* to be given, but a person making a choice.
