A monohybrid cross is like planting two pure line seeds, one with a dominant trait and one with a recessive trait, and seeing their first generation all look the same. The 3:1 ratio shows up in their grandchildren's generation, where for every one plant showing the hidden trait, three show the visible one. But in my jackfruit saplings, I've seen this ratio go for a toss—some seasons, it's more like five to one, or the traits mix completely. The books don't account for our soil and the way the crows meddle with the flowers.
