A setter is the brain, yaar, calling plays based on the blockers he sees. First tempo is a quick attack right off his hands, second tempo gives more time. In a 5-1, you have one setter always in control; a 6-2 uses back-row setters. But all this theory… on our dusty courts in Punjab, the best setters played by instinct, not systems. My national coach always said I, as an opposite, needed a setter who could read my eyes mid-air, not just run a tempo from a playbook.
