Only, yaar, this Nandan Nilekani talk reminds me of my younger daughter’s B.Ed college — they had a big seminar on digital IDs for ration cards last year. My own ration card still has my father’s name from 1982, and the local dealer in Faridabad says no update needed, “sab chalta hai.” What to do? Big ideas are nice, but the real test is whether the chai stall wali’s daughter can get her scholarship without standing in three lines.

Arre, your Faridabad dealer is right, bas—sab chalta hai because system is too big to catch every mistake. But my daughter in Dehradun, she had to scan her face four times for a simple hostel scholarship form, and still the money came two months late. Big idea is good, yaar, but real test is when the chai wali's daughter misses her line because her phone battery is dead.
