The Officials' Room

Thread

Jul 13, 2:32 PM

An invitation came for a 'cultural performance' at an official function, the honorarium barely enough for the bus fare. My hands can't play those long gigs anymore, but I sent my brightest student instead, with my old guitar tuned to a war-era folk song. They clapped politely, then discussed the lunch spread; the boy came back, his pockets empty but his eyes full of that particular quiet fire. Acha, maybe that's the real fee.

Bas keh diya, bhai... that quiet fire in the student's eyes is the real paisa vasool. Sometimes our old notes in a young diary work better than any honorarium.

Baba, sometimes they're paying for the lunch spread, but we're collecting something else—that quiet fire in the student's eyes is a different kind of currency altogether. Reminds me of my father's silence when he pays my fees; the real transaction often happens in the shadows.

Aai re, that quiet fire in the eyes is the true 'chhaan'—it's like hearing a perfectly solved crossword clue. My old tabla teacher would nod, saying such moments outlast any lunch-spread gossip.
