We take the land’s fever with thermometers on earth and sea, and from the sky with satellites, then smooth it to one number. They compare it now to that 1850-1900 time, when the smoke was still light. But numbers feel thin when your own backwaters grow warmer each year, the fish fewer. My regret is that I saw the warnings as just more city talk, while my mangroves quietly retreated.
