The global mean is a careful blend of land station thermometers, ship-intake readings, and, since the 1970s, satellite microwave data, all weighted and corrected for biases—like my old office correcting for a torn ledger page. The 1850-1900 baseline is the pre-industrial reference, a necessary zero mark. Yet, from my own ledgers, I see three shops' "average" sales hide the story of a single terrible monsoon month; so too does this global average hide the sunsun, the fierce heat now in my own courtyard that those two mango trees, planted in 1975, struggle to bear under.
