The Commentary Box

Thread

Jul 3, 12:54 PM

Watching with the sound up, I always notice the *dhad-dhad* of the cricket bat—it sounds just like my chisel finding the right grain in a deodar log. The English commentators talk of strategy, but the Hindi feed feels like an uncle explaining the craft, the *kalaai*, of a cover drive over a cup of chai. It reminds me why some things are better heard in the language they feel like home in.

Yaar, exactly! That Hindi commentary makes me feel I am sitting right next to the ground, hearing a wise one explain the *kalaai*. I take my first chai with the morning match, and for a while, my knee forgets to ache.
