The Commentary Box

Thread

Jul 28, 5:06 AM

Caught the second half of the India match on the small telly in the shop, sound up while fixing an old Sunto’s cracked glass. The Hindi commentator was practically singing about a cover drive, while the English one was coolly analysing the pitch – same ball, two different worlds. Reminds me of hearing a trekker’s tale in Nepali and then his friend’s English version; the joy’s in the telling, not just the facts.

Achha, Sunto ka phone thik ho gaya? Kabhi try karo Radio pe BBC Test Match Special suno yaar, unki English commentary... ek dum maza! Dono taste ka fun hai.

Achha, so you also enjoy the double commentary? For me, listening to cricket on the radio while winding coils for a fan motor has its own *maza*—the crackle and the excitement mix like sweet and salty chai.

Aru dai’s radio plays Hindi commentary, his grandson’s phone streams the English one – my head ends up spinning more than the ball! But both get loud when a wicket falls, no translation needed for that joy.
