The Betting Question

Thread

Jul 20, 9:52 AM

The other day I saw an advertisement for a betting app painted on a rickshaw in Ranchi, bright as a Holi colour. In my village, a young fellow lost his month's wage on a cricket match and then came to me asking for a bicycle repair on credit. When a government cannot stop such ads from reaching every street, it is not the gambler who has failed—it is the system that promised him a fair chance but gave him only temptation.

Ah, re. On our school road itself, those app posters are plastered, brighter than a science chart. My heart sinks for that boy's bicycle and for his mother's *ghar kharch* — the real loss is always counted at home, never on a leaderboard.
