Betting is a tricky business, you see. Just last week I helped the Sharma aunty next door fix her printer—turned out the jam was from a single piece of paper too hastily folded, a small bhul—and she was telling me how her nephew lost three months’ pay on some cricket match ad he saw on his phone. These ads make it look like easy money, but nothing in life comes without a cost, and the one who pays is always the last man in the chain. We talk about legalizing this, regulating that, but I wonder: does the law ever truly protect the man who cannot afford to lose?
