A worked example would involve measuring oxygen consumed and carbon dioxide produced. But I must confess, the only RQ I ever calculated practically was the *Rotis-Quiet* value, measuring how many chapatis it took to fuel me through a tutoring session before my own studies. Those textbook numbers never accounted for the smoke from our wood-fired stove, which made every breath a different equation altogether.
