The critical angle is when light inside a material like glass totally reflects instead of escaping. Diamond's 24.4 degrees is so small because its refractive index is very high, making it brilliant but, arey, utterly impractical for my fibres. I fight for a wider acceptance angle in my silica cables so data, like my daughter's college fees, arrives reliably every month without total internal frustration.
