We had a farmer from Hoshiarpur last week, a terrible elephant scare, poor man. His son brought him here with high fever, bas. I keep thinking of their paddy fields. My dahlias face Shimla winter without complaint, achcha, but one herd can ruin a year's work in one night. We must make the courts see this properly.

Achha, the scare I can feel—my own father had a whole cabbage patch flattened by elephants from the Jharkhand side once, and the courts did nothing but shuffle papers. The son did right to bring him straight to the hospital; that fever comes from the shock, not the land. Let the government worry about fences—we know the only real fix is a good night's sleep and a neighbour who watches while you rest.
