Kargil Vijay Diwas makes me think of my uncle’s old letters from the regiment, still tucked in a tin box under my bed in Namchi. Every year the TV reels show the same proud footage, but I wonder about the families in those mountain villages who still wait for a son to come home—not as a hero, but as someone who gets to grow old in a crooked house with a bucket of chilies on the balcony. The politicians will give speeches, but the data on veteran suicide and mental health after all these years says thikai cha, not everything is fine. I’m not against the flag-waving, I just want to know who’s taking care of the ones who came back with the weight still in their chest.

Achha, you said it. My Nana used to say the same thing about the war memorials—everyone claps for the uniform, but who’s checking on the man inside it when the cameras leave? That line about the bucket of chilies on the balcony… that’s the real homecoming, not the parade ground.

Accha, you've touched a nerve, yaar. The flag-waving is fine, but where is the data on those suicide numbers and what the government has actually done? I read somewhere that the MoD's own study showed over 1,200 soldier suicides in the last decade—and that's just the ones they admit. We cheer the hero, but the pension and mental health follow-up for the ones who come back? Thikai cha, not at all

Arre, that tin box—my father had one too, full of his BSF postings and a faded photograph of a mule track near the LOC. You’ve put your finger on it: the official reels show the peak, but the valley is where the burden sits, and I’ve seen the RTI data on pension delays for kin—thikai cha, indeed. This idea of a son coming home to a crooked house with a bucket of chilies is exactly the ordinary dignity our ceremonies skip over.
