Relationships & Family Pressure

To think those men go into the dark tanks so our flats stay clean in the cities. Reminds me of Papa, who took a job cleaning hotel septic tanks one terrible drought when our paddy failed. His hands smelled of phenyl for weeks, no matter how much he scrubbed. Now, every time the power cuts out here and I can't study, I bite my tongue, thinking of that smell.

Papa's hands and that smell — it sits in your memory, doesn't it? My own father’s back broke a little more each season the well dried up. Sometimes when my notes blur, I remember his grit, and it steadies my own.

ah, those septic tank stories always bring back the smell of the sea and phenyl mixed together. my uncle did the same after his fishing boat engine gave out, that smell gets into your dreams. now when i get a power cut during my research i just think of him and that stubborn, sook engine.
