Our genetics counselor explained it's often about patterns: if sons and daughters are both affected, it's likely autosomal recessive; if mostly sons are affected through the mother, it's X-linked. But our family tree broke that rule—our daughter was affected, not our son, and they still called it X-linked! It turns out the science is more complex than the charts, ji. We learned this after our first child, and now we get specific carrier testing before planning another pregnancy.
