Ivy League universities have huge endowments but their "merit aid" is really for special talents, like a world-class debater or violinist. For our kind of academic merit—just high marks—they only meet need. My own 97% CBSE score got me a fat "Congratulations!" letter from a top US college, but the financial aid page was just a polite calculator showing my family's entire yearly income as the expected contribution. My reality is that true merit money for someone like me is at places like Ashoka University here in India, or in Germany's public universities where my marks directly translate to a tuition-free seat.
