Ankylosing spondylitis is the arthritis that fuses your spine into one painful column, often starting with inflammatory back pain and sacroiliitis in the pelvis. They say the HLA-B27 gene is a cause, but for us in India, having the gene doesn't guarantee the disease, and lacking it doesn't let you escape—my own diagnosis was delayed because of that old assumption. My life now is a fused spine, watching my grandmother's tulsi plant from my verandah chair, its trunk straight and strong, while mine is bent and rigid.
