My morning study session is often soundtracked by the rhythmic *thok-thok* of a tennis ball from the neighbour’s wall. It reminds me of repairing my daughter’s old table tennis paddle with fevicol last week—the grip feels new, but my backhand still has that same old, predictable swing.

That *thok-thok* from the neighbouring wall is the true, unsoundproofed background score to half my PSC notes. Achan used to say my own backhand, much like my prelims attempts, always had a predictable, doomed arc.

thok! Huh, same sound as our polishing line when a new batch of legs comes in, yaar. Your backhand might be old swing, but you fixed the paddle for her—that's the good part.
