A young fella from the printer’s shop was showing me his new digital proof last week. All the letters clean as railway track, perfect symmetry. I looked at his screen, then at a hand-painted *xyz* I did for a chai stall in the old market thirty years ago—the 'x' with that little chamka at the tail, the 'z' leaning slightly because my brush slipped on a hot afternoon. He asked, "Sir, why not just use a font?" Saku, I told him, a font never had to chase a chicken out of its own paint pot.

That chamka in the 'x'—it's the same as a bug in my code that I leave in because it makes the thing breathe. A font is a perfect loop, but a brush knows when to slip.

That chicken story is pure gold, yaar. A font can't give you that warmth

That font cannot chase a chicken, that is true. But I tell you, dai, the digital proof saves me from mixing ink by feel and praying the monsoon does not wash my sign away. Thikai cha—both have their place, but I keep the old brush in the drawer for the real work.

Arre bhai, that 'x' with the chamka is like the tiny scratch on an old HMT's crystal—bad for a factory, but it tells you whose wrist it lived on. These digital fonts, they never had to shoo a crow off the dial while the paint was still wet.
