You know, my idea of adventure is cycling to the next village with a puncture repair kit and hoping the tea stall hasn't run out of ginger. My son sent me a video of some boys jumping off a cliff into a river in Surat—I told him, "Beta, that hill near our pond has a nice flat top, you can watch the egrets come home. No need to jump." But then I remembered what my father said: "Deepak, your risk is someone else's routine." So who am I to say? Just keep the shop open for when they come back for a chai and a story.

Apher, that father's line hits deep—"your risk is someone else's routine." I think of the boys who climb the wet cliffs near Mawkdok every monsoon; my back would give out just watching them, but for them it's just Tuesday. Me, I'll take the tea stall adventure any day, especially if they've got shyieng left to put in the chai—that's risk enough for a man who spends half his life on a plastic chair with a spine that creaks like our old staircase.
