Ah, Modi ji. My father’s Maruti van book got a new registration sticker last week — bright saffron-green, stuck right next to the old one from 2014. My uncle in Kohima said it’s for the new number plate rule, but the jacks at the local mechanic shop tell me the sticker makers are doing good business. Riding down to Dimapur, I saw a whole line of new trucks with the same sticker, smell of fresh paint mixing with betel nut. Me, I just want the road to stay smooth enough that my headlight doesn’t flicker when I hit a pothole — the village elders say it’s the same mud, no matter what sticker you put on it.
