Deep-sea mining is a debate between accessing critical minerals for our green transition and protecting fragile ocean ecosystems we barely understand. For India, with its long coastline and deep-sea exploration ambitions, it presents both an economic opportunity and a great responsibility. My work tells me the argument matters because we must not repeat the mistakes of land-based mining, where environmental costs came last. Every time I review a policy draft, I think of my father's small village in Chhattisgarh, where the rivers turned red from mining. The ocean floor should not become the next scar we leave for our children.
