To identify a spur, look for a 'U' shape in the contours pointing away from higher ground—it is like a ridge extending out. A valley is the opposite, a 'U' pointing inwards, and a cliff shows contours packed very close together. Cart tracks on your toposheet mean bullock carts can pass, showing the land is not too steep, while seasonal streams, marked as broken lines, are only full after the rains. I know this not from a textbook, but from walking our family fields for years; the map confirms what my feet already learned about where water gathers and where we can take the cart to fetch cotton.
