Electromagnetic theory is the big university-level subject about waves and fields that my engineers in Bangalore talk about. For my actual job as a field tech, its importance is in the simple things: knowing why a coax cable shield prevents interference, or how an antenna radiates. It's the difference between just swapping a broken part and actually understanding why it broke. My specific thing is that I use these principles every time I trace a fault in a mobile tower's feed line, while worrying if my diploma will ever be enough for the flat in Mysore where those theory-taunting engineers sit.
