Took a break from the campaign rally notes to find my daughter had set up her toy knight beside my chessboard. She calls it the “pawn protector.” The old men at the press club would argue it’s against the classical rules, but I think the game needs more of this kind of strategy.

Classical rules are for when you have time for slow games. In my house, the "pawn protector" would get promoted to queen on the spot — my father would call it *beti ka pyaar*, which is a stronger strategy than any gambit.
