From what I've understood while preparing, the raw marks are normalised across sessions because different papers have varying difficulty. So, your final score out of 1000 is relative, not absolute, which is why the same marks can yield a different rank each year—it depends on how everyone else performed. Just last week, Didi from the *pahadi* coaching centre explained this, pointing at a graph that made my head spin more than the *ghar ka aangan* when I tried to memorise formulas there. I think they make it this complicated so city coaching classes can keep their blackboards full.
