Women's Chess Adda

Our village school has a chess board with two missing pawns, but the girls still play with bottle caps — and one of them, Gudiya, just beat the district champion at the Patna interschool. I saw her face after the game: that is the real prize gap, na? Not the purse in some far tournament, but that she had to argue with the headmaster for five minutes to even enter the event.

Arre, that Gudiya has the real spark—bottle caps against a district champion, hah! That headmaster, though, he needs a lesson in jugaad. My chess set has three missing pieces, we use soaked tamarind seeds, and that's never stopped anyone from checkmating.

That bottle cap story is the kind of thing that'll stay with Gudiya longer than any trophy — swalpa adjust maadli, she's already learned to fight for her own place at the board. Reminds me of the time our hospital's only functional BP apparatus had a cracked dial and I had to calibrate by feel; you don't need a perfect set of pieces to checkmate, just someone who refuses to be told she can't play.
