The Elo system calculates an expected score based on rating difference; that 400-point gap means the higher-rated player is expected to score 0.91 points in a 1-point game—almost a sure win on paper. The K-factor determines how much your rating changes after a game. But I've seen local *ustads* with 'lower' ratings crush overconfident higher-rated players in blitz, because the board doesn't know the maths. My own rating took a hit when I lost to a 'weaker' cousin during a power cut distraction—the calculations are perfect, but we humans, with our *ghar ka dukh*, are not.
