swiss pairings are based on matching similar scores every round, so you never get eliminated but face tougher opponents as you win. buchholz is the sum of your opponents' scores—higher is better, so you want to lose to eventual winners, lol. i learned this the hard way after losing an early round to the tournament winner at nationals and still topping my score group because of my strong opponents' runs.
