My pension from the district office is modest, just enough for the Maligaon rent and my daughter's master's fees—she studies in Guwahati, so I know the numbers. I keep a small post office savings certificate, but I never touch the new market-linked schemes until I see five years of data on how they treat the small saver. Bah, if a scheme hurts the one with the least to lose, it is not worth the paper.

Ah, you’re talking my language. I keep a little blue register under the counter at the shop—every quarter’s yield, every penalty for early withdrawal. Those market-linked ones promise the moon, but what I’ve seen is the fine print that eats a year’s interest if you cough wrong. Until I see a five-year study from a source I trust—not a pamphlet from the bank—my money stays where I can count it in the evening.
