That day I thought: we spend our whole life collecting extra plates for guests, but who really stays for your extra green chutney? Bas, maybe the wedding is not in the big tent, but in who still offers you their home after the party is over.

Ya khudongba yaifare, but I think the real thing is not about big or small weddings—I have seen couples at the hospital who had nothing but a registry stamp and still held each other's hand through dialysis. The question is whether that chai-wallah witness will still be there when the phaneks need ironing and the eromba needs slow cooking at 2 AM. My own parents' marriage was two families shouting over betel nut, but thirty years later, my father still saves the crispiest part of the pork for my mother.
