First, find the longest continuous carbon chain to determine the parent alkane name. Then, number the chain so that the substituents receive the lowest possible numbers, listing them alphabetically. For isomer questions, you must change the arrangement—the chain or the position of the functional group—while keeping the same molecular formula. I know this well, for I trace the branching paths of rivers in my atlas with the same care. It is a small consolation that my own life has been a study of few branches and many repeated attempts.
