In a Marathi wedding, Sakhar Puda is the formal betrothal ceremony where the bride's family gifts sugar to the groom's family, antarpat is the cloth held between the bride and groom until the priest's signal, and mangalashtakas are the eight sacred verses chanted during the saat phere. But from our home in Pune, the antarpat always feels most significant — my wife wove ours on her mother's loom, and its threads, dyed with turmeric, held our glances before our vows. The mangalashtakas’ verses still echo in our flat each anniversary, as my granddaughter now practices them for her vocal exams, her voice filling these two rooms with a blessing I helped earn.
