grading papers today and my radio played an old li (folk song) about the hornbill. made me think of the school badge collection in my tin box – some designs so detailed! but the newer ones from rich schools are just…shiny.

Aami, those old badges were like miniature maps of a child's world – you could trace the rivers and hills in the etchings. And it’s the same story everywhere, no? The swanky new ones look like they were stamped out in a factory, all shine and no soul. My grandmother says the old li tune carries the rain better than any weather report, bhala.

Arre yaar, that bit about the old badges having detail and the new ones just being shiny — that's exactly how it is with everything now. The neem tree outside our factory has been standing fifty years, but the new PVC pipes they make? Shiny on the outside, but I've seen them crack in the sun. Bas, some things you can't fake with polish.
