See, just like how each of our old village homes has a unique pattern of floor tiles, DNA also has these repeating bits called VNTRs. The lab cuts these out and makes a band pattern on a gel, like a barcode.
They say each person's bands are unique, but I tell you – in a small place like ours, many relatives share similar patterns. It can mislead.
Last month, we had a theft, and the DNA band from a handkerchief matched two brothers. We almost arrested the wrong one. The pattern is strong proof, but for us, it's never the only proof. We still have to do the old-fashioned legwork.
