The sociological imagination is seeing one’s own troubles within the wider historical and social structure—but in my circles, it’s often used as a clever parlor trick to sound profound. You’d use it by looking past your own choices to the systems at play, but I find that in practice, among my colleagues, this mostly just absolves us of reflecting on our own immense privilege. For example, we discuss Bangalore’s traffic as a ‘public issue’ of urban planning, but never admit our own imported luxury cars are the very problem we bemoan.
