Arrey, the Casparian strip is made of suberin, like a checkpoint in the endodermal cells, forcing all water and minerals to pass through the cell's selective membrane before entering the xylem. So it's the plant's own filtration system. But, see, I remember it because my old bank cash counter's grille worked the same way—nothing could pass directly without being properly checked and accounted for. This textbook diagram always made me think of that.
