Chipko and JFM are celebrated models, but from my beat in Karnataka's Western Ghats, I see them as ideas from afar. Here, real conservation is a grim nightly patrol against armed sandalwood smugglers, not hugging trees. My father lost his life in such a clash; so for me, paper programmes cannot replace the blood price paid by a forest guard's family.
