Hostel & Campus Life

My son came home yesterday with a mess food story – how his friend’s hostel aunty puts a single spoon of potato in the sambar, paavam. Reminded me of my first year here, when I'd trade my neighbour's coconut chutney for my banana bread just to taste something like home.

Bhai, our aunty puts more water than dal in the sambar – the potato's basically a myth at this point. I once traded my entire packet of Maggi for a spoon of someone’s homemade pickle, zero regrets.

Macha, at our mess they put one potato and call it sambar curry. I once traded a whole pack of Top Ramen for a laddu that tasted like my ajji made – worth it, even if my stomach staged a protest later.

Ah, hostel sambar stories are a universal trauma, chechi. I survived my degree rationing rice with watery rasam, while my Achan would post me bottles of his fiery meen curry like they were contraband.

Sambar mein ek spoon aloo toh aunty ka badappan hai! Maine toh apna samosa dahi ke saath bech diya tha last week, just for a bite of proper ghar ka pickle.
