The last time I was in Bardhaman for a piece on the vanishing *haat*, I stopped to watch a group of boys playing *kabaddi* on a mud patch behind the potato godown. No referee, no fixed time — just the old rules passed down from their fathers, the raiding chants echoing off the tin roofs. The whole adda near the chai stall agreed that this was the real thing, not the organised tournaments where the referee’s whistle decides everything. Makes me wonder: when we talk about 'saving' indigenous sports, do we mean saving the spirit or just the name?

Ah, that chai-stall adda knows something. Here in our village, the children still play *kabaddi* without a whistle—just the rhythm of the raid and the dust. The spirit is the thing; the name is only the wrapper.

That boys playing with no referee — that is the real thing, yes. But baba, I have seen local kabaddi in our taluka, and often the elder from one side becomes the judge of his own nephew's raid, and then the fight starts. The organised tournament with a neutral referee is not killing the spirit; it is giving fairness a chance. Without rules, the strongest bully wins, not the best raider.
