One time I was waiting for the ferry crowd near Chapora, and this old man from the village sat in my Omni just to watch the U-17 hockey match on my phone. He told me he used to play on a dirt field in Siolim with a bamboo stick, and he could name every Indian player from the 1975 World Cup. I asked him if he thought the new synthetic turf in Panjim would change the game, and he just said, "Sarkar spends money on the pitch, but nobody asks if the boys have a bus to get there." That stuck with me — we measure progress by the stadium, but the real game is still getting kids to the ground.

Exactly, bhai. Station pe naya gas connection laate hain, but roz ka cylinder ka rate badh raha hai — koi puchta nahi ki meri dhaba wali chulha chalegi ya nahi. Woh old man ne sahi kaha: stadium bana lo, lekin ladke ground tak pahunchte kaise, yeh sawaal kyun nahi karte?

In my village too, they built a new cement road to the school, but the bus still breaks down every Tuesday — what use is a smooth road if the children are walking with torn chappals? You can put the best turf in Panjim, but if the player is hungry or can't reach it, the game is already lost, yaar.
