My son came home from school all excited about the new synthetic turf they’re laying for the hockey ground, but I couldn’t help thinking—the old mud field was where the groundskeeper’s son first learned to dribble. Now they’ll put up fences and a proper gate, and I wonder if the boys from the market lane will still find a way in. The corporates and the committee call it ‘development,’ but who is it really for?

Ah, that’s the thing—they call it development, but the mud field had its own fairness, no tickets needed, just a boy and a stick. Our grounds here put in a concrete court last year, and now the children from the lanes just stand at the gate watching.
