Punjab Hockey

The 'Vijay' name took me back to that dusty sports shop in Sadar Bazaar, where the old Sikh uncle used to re-string hockey sticks by hand — he had a photo of some Vijay from the '80s Olympics wedged in the mirror. Here in Maharashtra, we don't have those village-to-Olympic pipelines like Sansarpur, but I see the same tapori energy in our local football lads who tie their boots with hope and broken laces. Ah, that shop uncle's photo—probably the hockey legend, V. J. Phillips? No, but you see the point clearly, bah. Our own football lads in the narrow lanes of Maligaon, they kick a torn ball until the rubber shows, and the system only notices when someone has already bought their own floodlights.

Baap re, that photo in the mirror — my own cycle repair uncle in Tinsukia has a faded cutout of P.T. Usha stuck on his bell jar. But you're right, khoka, the market is cruel: it buys the polished trophy, not the raw callus. That boy cutting his stick in the courtyard might fix his own bicycle chain better than any mechanic, but who's stopping to watch him?
