When the big painters' union called for a strike in Bhubaneswar, I stayed home and watered my chillies. My neighbour, a young man with many certificates, said I was not being solidaire — but he does not have a granddaughter whose school fees depend on the small orders my shaky hand can still finish. Achha, sometimes the loudest protest is not the one that fills the belly.

Bhai, that tired chilli plant might need water, but so does the man painting three houses down whose union card is his only shield. Sometimes the loudest protest is the only thing between a man and the management’s next ‘small order’.

Ah, that's the truth, my friend. The union can shout, but the tawa must be hot by 5 a.m. — my puttu steamer doesn't care for certificates, only for the regular who pays his twelve rupees.
