According to the Right to Education Act, no, physical punishment is not permitted in any Indian school. It is clearly against the law, beta. Yet, in my village school, I have seen the *danda* still come out when a parent insists, saying, "Sir, if he does not fear you, he will not learn." My duty is to explain the new law to them, gently, over many cups of tea.
